St.Joseph and St. Bernadette

Welcome to Year 1!

The teachers are: Ms Asantewaa - St Joseph
                             Miss Groom  - St Bernadette

This term our new IPC topic is " Hooray let's go on holiday!". During this topic we will be looking at different countries around the world, sharing and discussing holidays we have been had and having an IPC day where the children will get to experience different cultures.

For homework complete the numeracy task and literacy task.

Remember to keep on practising partitioning your numbers for Numeracy e.g. 15= 10+5, 22=20+2.
Homework is always given out every Friday and is due in on Wednesdays. If you have any problems with the homework please do not hesitate to see the class teacher or teaching assistant, Mrs McShane.

The children will receive their spellings every Monday and have their spelling test on Friday. Please ensure that your child brings their spelling book into school and also try to encourage your child to use the: Look, Cover, Write, Check, technique.
Reading books need to be in school everyday. Please encourage your child to retell the story in their own words and ask them questions about what they have read.

Examples of questions you can ask your child while reading:

First you can get them to read the title and blurb – Ask them to tell you what they think the story is about? (Predict)

When they have read the book you can ask them: Was your prediction right? If yes/no why? (Encourage them to answer in sentence form e.g. My prediction was right because…)

As they're reading you can also ask them questions like e.g. What do you think is going to happen next? Why do you think Pip did that?...

P.E. in St Joseph's class will be every Monday and Thursday and in St Bernadette will be on Wednesday and Thursday. Please remember to bring your child's P.E. clothes  in on Monday and take them home on Friday(white top and blue shorts).
In Numeracy please encourage your child to recognise, record and add their numerals from 0-20 and above as a challenge. We will also be looking at number patterns e.g. counting in 2's, 5's and 10's.
In Literacy we are encouraging the children to use their letter sounds within their writing. We would be very grateful if you could reinforce this at home.
